Windows are used as a selling device promoting products. They also mirror what the store is about, bringing pleasure to the eye. A stores window is effectual if it tempts customers who will want and be able to purchase the products offered, conveying quality, style and pricing Portas, 2007. Moreover, windows can lure someone in a shop due to psychological factors. Brand founders such as Armani and Dior, give their own unique identity on their products and are therefore based on persona. As an online source says Armani Exchange has become one of the most dynamic collections with its own unique identity, as well as an ever growing base of young customers . City life is emitted through its concept of sexy, chic and stalwart garments. Hence, it can be said that quality along with brand loyalty comes before the cost. Windows work on the principle first impression is the best impression, implying that only a few seconds are needed for a display to speak to a passer by and get him/her inside a store. Portas asserts that visual merchandising is the art and science of silent selling, bringing product, environment and space into one stimulating and engagingRetail design might not be talked about much but theres a lot that goes into making a store visually appealing for a shopper. Jenny Andrews, whos been creating magic for a lot of the leading brands, gets talking about the art and science behind itNo one takes the adage First impressions last more seriously than a visual merchandiser. And if youve merely suspected it, well spoil the surprise for you by telling you that when it comes to shopping, chances are extremely high that your choice of where and how much you shopped for, was subtly influenced by the sheer brilliance of the stores window display. Visual merchandising VM, in other words. Now, in the world of fashion, in fact, the entire lifestyle retail sector, visual merchandising is an aspect thats seen more than its talked about, because its all part of the intangible shopping experience you see. Its also a bit difficult to catch hold of this breed of workers to talk to; as they are almost all the time busy thinking up ideas or setting up the store displays that act as shopper magnets. DELIVER IT YESTERDAY!The job of a visual merchandiser is extremely hectic. It is a 24/7, 365 days a year job, opens Jenny Andrews, founder and CEO of Studio J, a Bangalore based outfit that won the VM and RD Merit for Best Window Display award at In Store Asia 2013 held in Mumbai early this year. This is but only one of the many awards won by Studio J over the last couple of years for their rather innovative ideas for clients who include Tanishq, Puma, Enamor, Twills and Global Desi among others. The job is extremely demanding and you have to be on your toes all the time. You also have to have the ability to multi task, evinces Jenny adding, fact is, in the retail industry, everyday rentals are high and so the client is always looking at ways to get maximum leverage from the space. That is why in this industry, youre always required to deliver things yesterday. CREATE A FANTASYA job where the success of your idea can be measured against the most tangible metric of increased foot falls, visual merchandising according to Jenny is something that cannot be taught. You learn the art on the job, she succinctly puts it. Some of the window displays that one gets to see these days would have you agree that there is something arty about it all. Every installation we do is a 3D installation, avers Jenny. But of course, unlike an artist needs to only bother about critical acclaim, a retail designer needs his/ her creation to sell the product.
